Jasmina Anema, 6 Year Old who Inspired Thousands (and me), Dies

Damn.
Double Damn.

Jasmina Anema, the Manhattan girl whose brave battle against leukemia captivated the city and inspired thousands to become bone marrow donors, has died. She was just six years old.
Jasmina's year-long fight against an especially fatal form of the disease ended at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday night at NYU Langone Medical Center, her mother, Thea Anema, said.

Use your iPhone to Stay Informed

I don’t have an iPhone, but I am seriously considering getting one just because the apps are so darn cool. Here are few cancer related apps that I thought you might find interesting and if I missed any, please share:

"Time on Fire" Tough, but Important Book

Granted, it did come out over a decade ago and I found it in a used bookstore, but Evan Handler's leukemia memior, "Time on Fire" was incredible.

People who are way cooler than me know him as an actor best known as Harry Goldenblatt from HBO's Sex and the City. Handler currently co-stars in Showtime's hit series Californication co-starring David Duchovny. His past acting credits include Lost, The West Wing, Ransom, and Taps.

Cancer and Metaphors

When the US created the National Cancer Institute in 1937, the headline for the Washington Post boasted, "'Conquer Cancer' Adopted as Battle Cry of the Public Health Service." In 1971, President Nixon launched the "War on Cancer" by signing the National Cancer Act, framed as an "intensive campaign" to find a cure and referred to as the "Act to Conquer Cancer".

Pitfarts? Seriously.

If I hadn't read it on the website, I wouldn't believe it. I am all for awareness - however weird the method.

The Lymphoma Association has launched an exciting campaign to raise awareness of lymphoma among young people.

To help make them aware of the symptoms of the disease, we have created a simple acronym PITS - which stands for Persistent lumps, Itching, Tiredness and Sweating.

Lymphoma ... a sexually transmitted disease?

Twice in the last month I've been asked if lymphoma could be passed through sexual contact, or even kissing. I worked hard to make sure that my quick answer—"No"—was correct. It wasn't.

Really? Is lymphoma an STD that can be transmitted through unprotected sex?

The hopelessly unsatisfying short answer is … you should know better, in cancer there are no short answers.

Brothers and Sisters TV Show Chronicles Lymphoma Battle

“Brothers & Sisters Season 4, episode 13 is about A Bone to Pick, Kitty’s lymphoma reaches a critical stage, while the Walkers’ frantic search for a donor leads to an unlikely source,” or so says the show’s episode notes.

Lives Inspired Breast Cancer Survivor Book, Plus Leukemia Cell Research

In keeping with the theme of collecting inspirational stories of hope after a cancer diagnosis, I found a book you might want to add to your collection. Called “Lives Inspired: Portraits of Breast Cancer Survivors,” “it was just released last month and offers a beautiful portrayal in pictures and words of the struggles and victories of breast cancer survivors.

Collecting Miracles

A friend of mine underwent cancer treatment not long ago and one of the things he did was collect stories of people who underwent very difficult circumstances and yet persevered.
