FDA approves Folotyn for peripheral T-cell lymphomas

FDA regulators have apparently given accelerated approval to Allos Therapeutics' treatment for peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL), Folotyn (pralatrexate injection) for treatment of relapsed or refractory PTCLs. The drug could be available in the US as soon as October.

Folotyn becomes the first drug FDA-approved to treat PTCLs.

Older Lymphoma Patients Focus of New Study

Dr. Aileen Go of Loyola University Health System, who is studying treatment options for older leukemia and lymphoma patients, has won a prestigious Amgen Foundation Fellowship grant. Go is studying the use of umbilical cord blood transplants grown from cord blood cells outside the body. The transplants are intended for patients ages 55 to 75, who previously have been excluded from such treatments.

Anderson, “Clinical trials are research studies with human volunteers to see how new medicines or treatments work in people. Promising Drug for chronic myeloid leukemia Fast tracked by FDA

ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals chief executive Dr Greg Collier said the drug, omacetaxine, offered significant potential because it killed the stem cells that caused chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Dr Collier said 80 per cent of patients on the clinical trials conducted in Australia, the US and Europe, no longer had cancer in the blood and one in five no longer had cancer in the bone marrow.

Research published by in the most recent issue of Nature Genetics suggests that one chronic and sometimes lethal illness, asthma, may be able to help patients with another chronic and often lethal illness, chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

Alternative Approaches to Cancer Treatment

Odds are, you do. Latest studies show that a majority of cancer patients use some form of CAM, or complementary medicine. Increasingly, alternative treatments are now being seen as integrative, and are integrated with traditional, or allopathic medical care. For example, yoga or a vegetarian diet might be integrated with chemotherapy.

Radiation Support and Diet

Radiation therapy is a local treatment, meaning that it affects only the area of the body being treated. In people who are treated to the head and neck area, side effects include mouth sores and a sore throat. In those who undergo radiation therapy to the gastrointestinal tract, side effects can include nausea, diarrhea, and inflammation of the esophagus, the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.
