Leukemia.Org Clothing Donation Scam

WABC TV 7 New York reports that charity clothing donation boxes have turned up in some New Jersey towns marked "leukemia.org", the domain name of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Reporter Tappy Phillips got to the bottom of the story - the boxes are not affiliated with LLS or any other charity! A woman reached at a phone number on the bins kept changing her story when each story did not check out. The consumer affairs division in New Jersey is investigating.

Lymphoma Leads to a Camp for Cancer Kids

Jason Smith worked in the summer-camp world for the past few years, but he didn't think about the relative lack of camp opportunities for children with cancer until his stepfather, John Charles Smith, was diagnosed with lymphoma.

Blortland - Visualizations for Beating Lymphoma

Back when I was fighting cancer, the online community was smaller - anyone working on beating cancer online got to know the others. One of those people was Diana, a talented artist and budding site designer.

She created an entire website devoted to visualizing the destruction of the lymphoma within. As creative and inspiring as it is original, I have not found any other site like it.

Today Diana is still in remission from Hodgkin's lymphoma. You are invited to check out Blortland for yourself.

Andres Galarraga - Baseball Player, Lymphoma Survivor

Do you know that top Mets baseball player Andres Galarraga is a survivor of recurrent Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma? He has even created a DVD to inspire other lymphoma patients. If you want to read up on Andres, Newsday did an excellent article on him.

PS. Sorry for the posting gap, busy time around Washington, DC.

A Survivor and Lymphoma Wristbands

Today I read the story of "Grandpa Pat", who is Pat Daulton, a Mantle Cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) survivor. To help in the cause in supporting the children helped by Pat over the years and lymphoma research, Pat and Renee Daulton formed the Daulton Foundation.

NHL Patient Sets State Powerlifting Record

Jason Orts of the Seguin (Texas) Gazette reports about Joseph Kosarek today. Kosarek, a low grade NHL survivor for more than 10 years, set a new state amateur record for the dead lift for his age and the 161.5 weight class with a lift of 423.5 pounds! And that after CHOP chemo, radiation and interferon treatments.

Kosarek says “Cancer is a very difficult thing to overcome. There’s no doubt about that. But if you just continue to keep pushing forward, you can get over it.”

The Top Gift: Caring

It's darker and colder than usual these days - a crummy time to realize you or a loved one has cancer. With lymphoma, this is usually a temporary thing as remission may come soon but that comfort might be hard to muster.

Diagnosis over the holidays

It may not be clear from my story but it was around the holidays in 1993 that I was having the worst of my symptoms and they prepared to send me to London for tests. Night sweats, back pain, lack of feeling in my feet while walking in the snow, etc.

I clearly remember going to a dinner party of an Embassy official on Boxing Day, December 26th. Generally I was cold and I wore a thick sweater I had bought in Nepal. All of a sudden I was extremely warm and a bit dizzy from then on.

DVDs

I'm a videophile. I've liked movies for a very long time. When I could buy a computer to make movies, I did and I haven't looked back.

We now have quite a library of commercial DVDs and a number of homemade ones.

When the weather is bad or you feel crummy, there is nothing like getting comfy and watching a good movie.
