Hot & Cold

It seems news comes in groups - some days I have two or three items to post, some days nada on the news front. When it comes to new cases, no news is good news. I'd rather get info on new treatments, potential cures.

Eldest children have a lower NHL risk

Eldest children and only children were only half as likely to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma than other people, an Australian researcher said.

People with a history of food allergies also have a 70 per cent lower risk of developing the potentially fatal cancer of the immune cells, University of New South Wales's Associate Professor Andrew Grulich said today.
"The risk of lymphoma is roughly half in first born and only children, compared to later born children," Prof Grulich of the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research said.

Melvin's Story - Hodgkin's & LyP

I was having fevers, chills, nights sweats and rapid weight loss in the summer of 1988. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease, stage 4BE MC. When I was diagnosed, they only used 4B. After reading your story, I was definitely far advanced with my disease. My doctor to this day tells me how lucky I am to be alive. My bone marrow was involved and also the first part of me to go into remission. I was 29 years old when I was diagnosed.

After 20 treatments of ABVD and 4 MOPP, I have been in complete remission now for 15 years.

NCI is sponsoring a Science Writers' Seminar to highlight the latest scientific discoveries in children's cancer and treatment on April 26. Speakers will include Drs. Lee Helman and Alan Wayne of NCI; Dr. Donald Small of Johns Hopkins University; and Kathy Russell, acting executive director of the Children's Inn at NIH.

More Clues in the Causes of B-Cell Lymphoma

Researchers at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have found that the TEL2 gene cooperates with the previously discovered MYC gene in promoting cases of childhood lymphoma. The study's findings help explain the interlocking roles of MYC, TEL2, and p53 in the development of B lymphoma. It was already known that many human B-cell lymphomas over-express the MYC gene, either because the tumor cells acquire additional copies of this gene or because the cells suffer mutations that affect control over the level of MYC expression. Excess MYC expression spurs the cells to proliferate.
