Funding organization gives grant to find Burkitt's vaccine
University of Zurich professor Christian Münz has been awarded a hefty grant from the Association for International Cancer Research (AICR) in order to find effective vaccines as treatments against Burkitt's lymphoma-- the fastest growing tumor known to medicine, with a doubling time as quick as 24 hours.
Because of its aggressiveness, Burkitt's often responds to chemotherapy. But the lymphona subtype has been linked to the Epstein Barr virus (EBV), giving researchers reason to believe that Burkitt's is an attractive target for a vaccine.
Professor Munz is the Director of the Institute of Experimental Immunology at the University of Zürich. He also serves as Visiting Professor in the Virology Section, Division of Infectious Diseases, at the Department of Medicine, Imperial College, London.
