Nanotechnology delivers chemo without the side effects

Researchers associated with Rutgers University reported in the December 21 2009 issue of the journal Small that they may have found a way to make chemotherapy substantially more effective while virtually eliminating both resistance and the dreaded side effects of the drugs.

By using nanotech materials the researchers were able to deliver doxorubicin to drug-resistant ovarian cancer cells in a manner that was over 100 times more lethal than when doxorubicin was administered normally. Not only that, but since the drug is only released once it is inside the cancer cell, researchers believe that this action would eliminate the many side effects that come with chemotherapy since the drug isn't also killing healthy cells.
