Longtime Philadelphia Orchestra violinist succumbs to lymphoma

After a 19 year battle with an undisclosed subtype of lymphoma, Irving Ludwig, a longtime violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, has died.

Ludwig, 83, was born in Philadelphia to Ukrainian Jewish parents who had previously fled Russia for the US.

After studying at the Settlement Music School, Ludwig joined the National Symphony Orchestra as a 20 year old. In 1949 he joined the prestigious Philadelphia Orchestra, where he would perform for almost four decades.

Mr. Ludwig also served as the Music Director of the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra, one of the oldest community orchestras in the Philadelphia area.
