Is there a way to treat Hodgkins Lymphoma Stage 4 with high dose chemo & stem cell transplant that DOES NOT involve a blood transfusion?

Hi-
A person with stage 4 Hodgkin's can be treated with an autologous stem cell transplantation, a procedure that doesn't require a blood transfusion. In autologous stem cell transplantations, the patient's own stem cells are removed and banked in cold storage, then he or she undergoes high-dose chemotherapy. When that's finished, the stem cells are transplanted back into their body. The only reason I can think of that would require a blood transfusion is if during the procedure there was some massive blood loss and an emergency transfusion was necessary, but even that could be avoided by banking some of your own blood beforehand as well, to be used in the event of an emergency during the procedure.

Hope this helps,
Ross

Since the early 1970s, incidence rates for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma have nearly doubled. Improved diagnosis has contributed greatly to the increase as doctors better understand cancer of lymphocytes and can distinguish it from other diseases.
