Artificial lymph nodes in Popular Mechanics

The March 2009 issue of Popular Mechanics arrived in my mailbox yesterday. A piece titled “The Human Machine” caught my attention, and it featured an item about artificial lymph nodes under development at Japan’s RIKEN Institute.

I assumed this was breaking news, I knew it was breaking news to me. But in fact the RIKEN Research Center for Allergy and Immunology in Yokohama was discussing the development of artificial lymph nodes (aLNs) as far back as June of 2007.

Having managed to prompt their aLNs to generate immune cells and immunological responses in lab mice, researchers believe they could someday soon physically replace diseased lymph nodes in the human body.

However, this is not their chief aim. According to lead researcher Takeshi Watanabe, their purpose is to develop the aLNs into “functional organs applicable to particular diseases and allergies.”

Put another way, the aLNs will serve as points of delivery for immunity cells that are specialized to fight specific diseases, including some lymphomas.
