Lymphoma Leads to a Camp for Cancer Kids

Jason Smith worked in the summer-camp world for the past few years, but he didn't think about the relative lack of camp opportunities for children with cancer until his stepfather, John Charles Smith, was diagnosed with lymphoma.

"It really came as a result of my stepfather passing away. He was such a great person. He was always so giving of himself. I wanted to do something to feed off all the things that he had given to me and to so many others," said Smith, the founder and executive director of Camp Unali, which will be offering its first summer camp for children with cancer in July at Camp Brethren Woods north of Harrisonburg, Virginia.
